Up in the Air

Nominated for 'Actor in a leading role', 'Actress in a supporting role' (twice), 'Directing', 'Best Picture' and 'Writing', 'Up in the Air' is a cutesy romantic comedy about an HR consultant who in contradiction to his much beloved personal philosophy of 'No Baggage', 'No Relationships' falls in love with another equally shallow business executive who spends her life on flying business too.

It's funny, well written, well acted, but it falls way short of Oscar material in my humble opinion. George Clooney is stylish, suave and beautiful (as usual) but the film really seems like mediocre fayre. Its saving grace is that it is very genuine and timely, dealing with redundancy and the foibles of the modern business world, so it's a fresh take on a topical subject.

The best line in the film is undoubtedly when his new beau tells him: "Just think of me as you, with a vagina." and the most poignant line: "You're just a parenthesis."

Sad, timely, and an OK movie, certainly worth watching till the end of the credits if you're going to watch it for the touching song seemingly submitted by a random to the director over the phone entitled "Up in the Air".

Sweet.
