District 9

Peter Jackson produced 'District 9 'was a bit of a shock arrival on the film scene last year.

It's an extraordinary work of fiction about alien refugees who arrive on Earth and are confined to a large refugee camp on the edge of South Africa's Johannesburg.

With obvious subtexts on race and apartheid, it paints an extremely vivid picture of ghetto living amongst aliens, with an unhealthy dose of genetic modification and alien weapons technology thrown in.

Shot as if it were a documentary with special effects lovingly applied this film inspired me so much, I actually decided to join a Journalism course!

What's unique about this film is the artful blend of social commentary, documentary style reportage, fiction and special effects. I think it's unique, much more sophisticated than something like Cloverfield, cleverer by far than anything else I saw last year.

It's been awarded: 'Film Editing', 'Best Picture', 'Visual Effects', 'Writing - Adapted Screenplay'.
