An Education

'An Education' is the only British movie to have made it so successfully into the Oscars this year, with nominations for 'Actress in a Leading Role', 'Best Picture' and 'Writing - Adapted Screenplay'.

I genuinely hope that Carey Mulligan wins for playing her part as 'Jenny', the English public schoolgirl who, whilst being groomed for Oxford, is slyly seduced by an older man.

The film is beautifully made. It's a delight to watch and to be a part of. Mulligan's performance is sublime, although it's unclear yet as to her range, (as she seems to be playing herself for the most part), it is evocative, and although set in the 60s still retains every ounce of it's relevance in the modern world, particularly in today's heightened state of media induced 'paedophobia'.

It also deals with the theme of education vs. love and thereby acts as a beautiful counterpoint to 'Precious: Based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire' with which it is competing. In fact, it is interesting to note how the American and English stories complement each other on these themes, and how different two young girls (of the same age) can be in two exquisitely different worlds.
